Propolis is a resinous material gathered by bees from the deciduous tree bark and leaves. It is a sticky substance of a brown to black colour, an agreeable odor and a bitter taste. In the hive, bees mix Propolis with their own secretions and use it for repairing and constructing the hive. The bees use Propolis to protect the hive against bacteria or viral infection and dangerous toxins, especially over the entrance of the hive. It is not only to prevent the entrance from intruders, but to sterilize bees, brushing up against it from infection.
